PROJECTS | The Dalles
Are you looking for a project to help you improve your photography? You’ve come to the right place. There are so many good ideas out there. I have picked my favorites for you. Since moving to The Dalles, Oregon, I have been working on getting my business off the ground and running in a new location. I had waited a few months while I found my bearings and got used to the new area and place I am now calling home. I needed a project to keep myself busy and to get myself out of the rut I was digging. It has been several years since I have done a photography project. This is just what I needed to get myself back in the grove of photography in The Dalles. I chose a 100 day project. Read about this one and my other favorites below. I challenge you to pick one and get started today.
100 Days of Something
Pick a subject. It can be anything from an object to a toddler. Your goal is to take a picture of it each day. The hardest part of this project is wanting to use an image from the day before. To help improve your photography skills, you need to take a new picture every day. Take several if you want, but pick one as your main picture. I chose to post my images on our personal blog. I made sure to post the picture each day. This was helpful in keeping my project going and not using an image from another day.
Go around your town and look for objects that resemble letters. You can do this project over a several day span or all in one day. The biggest key is not to take a picture of an actual letter. Letters on buildings, letters on signs, letters on the sidewalk all of these and more are out of the question. This project gets your creativity flowing. Look at the woodwork on a building or a shadow on the ground. You will be amazed at where you can find a letter.
A Day in the Life
Put your camera on your nightstand before you go to sleep. When you wake up in the morning, grab your camera. Take pictures throughout your day. Show the world what a day in your life is like. Go ahead and take a picture of you brushing your teeth or your toddler’s hair. Take a picture of your oatmeal, lunch and dinner. Whatever it is that you do doing the day, take a picture. Make sure that you represent yourself in the pictures as well. Your face doesn’t have to be in the image. It can just be your hand or leg. You are a very important part in your day. This will also help you with the courage for the next project.
Self Portrait Week
I don’t know about you, but I am not a huge fan of taking self portraits. That is why A Day in the Life was a good place to start. You should try several different self portrait styles, but just make sure you are the one actually taking the picture. This can be hard. Take a look at my previous post about struggles of a self portrait. With this project, take a picture a day for a week. Try and make sure that the portraits stay true to who you are. Show the world who you really are.
I could keep going on different projects, but I will stop with these 4. Here are two more that don’t need a lot of explaining.
- A Photo a Day – 365 days
- 52 Weeks – a photo each week of the year
